Emily Smith drawings circa 1860

Emily Smith drawings contains 17 pencil drawings, mainly depicting pastoral scenes of farms, country homes, trees, animals, and landscapes. In a 1952 letter acknowledging the gift of the drawings, RIT President Mark Ellingson wrote, "The pencil landscape sketches have a delicate quality with very good delineation of tree forms and foliage. The animal studies are very well drawn, and the crayon pencil drawings of the cows are exceptionally good." The Ellingson letter is included in the collection. A portfolio of 17 drawings by 19th century Rochester artist Emily Smith.

Emily Smith was a Rochester artist active in the mid-1800s. Her artist studio was in the historic Reynolds Arcade in downtown Rochester (next to artist Grove Gilbert). It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
